Color analysis in Impressionist Paintings and Creating Paintings to Promote Positive Emotions

The purposes of the research were 1) to establish the principles for creating paintings that promote positive emotions in teenagers by analyzing visual art elements (color) of impressionism; 2) to create the new paintings by using each color group that could promote positive emotions in teenagers; and to 3) study effectiveness of the paintings created by evaluating emotional perception and analyzing electroencephalogram while viewing the paintings. The 43 participants were both male and female with the ages between 18 and 22 years old. The tools for examinations of positive emotions and EEG (electroencephalogram) were the paintings that promoted positive emotions and emotion rating scale.
The results showed that the paintings used in this research were consistent with happiness the most, followed by hope and love respectively. The creation of paintings that could make the audience feel happy consisted of important areas, integrity and composition of elements, and the use of colors with hue values of 76-146 degrees and brightness of 21-80. The creation of paintings that could make the audience have hopes consisted of free space which had the direction of continuous movement between free space and shape and the use of colors with hue values of 0-49 degrees and brightness of 21-80. The creation of paintings that could make the audience feel love consisted of the interaction between space, distance, direction, movement, shape of material and human; the use of colors with hue values of 0-41 and 76-119 degrees and brightness of 21-80. The study of the effectiveness of the paintings created by evaluating emotional perception revealed that the average scores (M) of the emotions occurred from viewing the paintings promoting emotions of happiness, hope, and love were 4.31, 4.08 and 3.50, and the standard deviations (SD) were 0.78, 0.90 and 0.80 respectively. Moreover, the analysis of the EEG of positive emotions in all three aspects (happiness, hope and love) showed that the left forebrain had similar values between 0.023 and 0.024, and the average of the electric wave interferon of the Alpha Brainwave at the right forebrain was 0.013, 0.017 and 0.016 respectively.
