Conservation and Promotion of Horse Carriage Model Making in Ban Ton Thongchai Community,Muang District, Lampang Province
The purposes of this research were 1) to conserve and promote the craft of horse-carriage model making at Ban Ton Thong Chai community, Muang district, Lampang province; 2) to provide interested manufacturers with an organized learning process; 3) to extract the lessons of horse-carriage model making learned from the experts; and 4) to create a handbook of horse-carriage model making. The sample of the research consisted of 5 craftsmen skilled in making horse-carriage models and 20 interested participants. The research tools are the handbook of making horse-carriage models, interview questions, observation forms, and self-reporting. The findings revealed that providing an organized learning process starting from developing basic craftsmanship resulted in the conservation and promotion of the craft of horse-carriage models. This is evident in the following facts: 1) the craftsmen saw their own progress in making standardized and acceptable products; 2) they developed their skills in making different parts of the models; 3) they understood the original process of making horse-carriage models and carried on the knowledge; 4) the craftsmanship was conserved in the form of a handbook of making horse-carriage model to serve as guidelines for interested people; 5) the conservation which resulted from learning from real experience enabled the new generation to observe the work process; 6) the participants were able to be experts lecturing in educational institutions and learning centers in the community; and 7) the horse-carriage models were promoted to be variously used as prizes, souvenirs, or home decorative products.
